16 police recruits die in auto crash

AN auto crash involving a Mercedes Benz car and an Hummer bus claimed the lives of 16 police recruits, as they were burnt at Omu- Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, at 9.00 a.m on Sunday.
Eyewitness at the scene of the accident said the Benz, with registration number Kaduna AB347BKA, collided with the Toyota Hummer bus conveying the police recruits, while the vehicles caught fire immediately.
It was also gathered that the police recruits were Kwara indigenes trained in Lagos, and were on their way to Nasarawa State, where they were posted.
It was gathered that three survivors in the incident had been rushed to Omu-Aran General Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.
Speaking on the development, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Fabode, said the police were aware of the accident, adding that he was yet to confirm the number of deaths.
In another development, gunmen killed two policemen at a checkpoint at Unguwan Dosa area of Kaduna, at the weekend.
The state PPRO, Aminu Lawan, confirmed the incident, saying, however, that one of the policemen died on the spot, while the other sustained injury and was receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
